Book Review: Reaper's Rhythm, by Claire Davidson

Kim is having a hard time coming to terms with the death of her sister, Charly. What she absolutely, 100% refuses to believe is that Charly killed herself. ‘Reaper’s Rhythm’, by Claire Davidson, is a Young Adult novel about a sixteen-year old girl and her insatiable need for answers. Kim very quickly becomes entangled in a mess of dangerous magic and murderous intent.

‘Reaper’s Rhythm’ is written in a style I have come to associate with the Young Adult genre. There is a lot of angst and an awful lot of stubbornness. The story is presented in the first person — Kim is telling the story as it unfolds. Author Davidson has done this cleverly and really manages to capture Kim’s voice. I am not a huge fan of YA as a rule, but I didn’t find this was an obstacle for enjoying ‘Reaper’s Rhythm’, and I really got involved in the story. I found Kim to be frustrating because she was so stubborn and wouldn’t pay heed to any warnings she was given. But at the same time, this was part of her charm. What is important is that this story is unique — I’ve never come across a concept like this before — and it’s interesting. A huge must for YA fans.

'Reaper's Rhythm' is the first in the 'Hidden' series. I have purchased the second book, 'Broken Bargain' and cannot wait to begin it.
